Personal Snapshot

Thanks for visiting my website. My name is Douglas Marlow, Ph.D. I’m a psychologist who’s going to skip the usual dossier for a more colorful personal snapshot. I wanted to help people when I started my academic and professional life but I knew I wasn’t at all prepared to do it well. So off to school I went; The Napa Valley for undergraduate and Southern California for graduate school. After my fifth year of graduate school and a Masters in both Psychology and Theology, I still felt something was missing. I sought some excellent training in both clinical work and leadership. The U.S. Navy was the rigorous solution to my problem. Tours of duty as a psychologist at the National Naval Medical Center (Bethesda), Okinawa Naval Hospital (Japan), and the Naval Academy all taught me leadership, preparedness, politics, and gave me exposure to diversity and shoe polish. Somehow these experiences blended psychoanalytic thought, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and functionalism--which all stuck. I’m sure I watch way too much TV. I love travel and techno, adventure and advocacy. I value connection in relationships and adventure in life. Surfing is my passion and possibly the most intense and emotionally pure sport I’ve ever experienced. Skiing, snowboarding, cycling, and rollerblading are close behind. I still serve my Country by consulting on relationships and resiliency for the Special Forces community. My life is filled with my private practice in Hermiston, my consulting practice, Advanced Advising, LLC in Portland, and creating diverse adventures. I think Oregon is a truly magnificent State and I’m honored and grateful for the opportunity to have represented Eastern Oregon and the Oregon Psychological Association (OPA) members as Legislative Chair, Secretary and President. I'm currently serving as Past President of OPA. I’m still naive enough to believe that Margaret Mead was right when she said, “A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”
